Candy A to Z: Peeps

March 22, 2018

Let's acknowledge it right off the bat -- Peeps are one of the most polarizing candies on the market today. There are Peeps fanatics who can't get enough of these colorful marshmallow treats. Their insatiable craving for Peeps has transformed a once-humble Easter candy into a year-round, multi-flavor, rainbow-colored marshmallow empire. On the opposite side is a group of people whose fiery, passionate hatred for Peeps is so intense, it could practically reduce a package of these poor little chicks into a steaming pile of neon pink goo. And even among the fans of Peeps, debates rage about whether to eat them "fresh" or to let them sit out until they get stale and crunchy. Did Just Born Inc. realize when they began manufacturing Peeps in 1953 that their innocent marshmallow snacks would create such intense conflict? We think not!

Not surprisingly, we put ourselves firmly in the "Peeps fanatics" category, and we stock as many different varieties as we can get our hands on, year round. But if you're not a fan, we won't judge you! As long as you respect our obsession, we'll happily recommend something from among the other four thousand delightful products we carry :)

Jimmy Sweet Tooth says: I have a confession to make... I don't like marshmallow, so I don't think it's fair for me to write this review. You can post hurtful things about me in the comments below if that will help you cope with this news. Fortunately, Mrs. Sweet Tooth is also an expert on all things sugary, and she had this to say:

"Every Easter I anxiously await the arrival of the sugary, spongy chicks -- the Peeps! Yellow Peeps are nostalgic to me. My dad and I share a love for the marshmallowy candy, but only the yellow chicks...not the imposters! When I bite into the chicks it instantly reminds me of my childhood Easter celebrations. And they're even better the next day when they are a tad bit harder."

Major components: Marshmallow

Primary texture: Chewy (very soft)

Flavor profile: Original Peeps have a basic marshmallow flavor, but there are dozens of Peeps varieties in all sorts of colors and flavors. See the links below!

Manufacturer: Just Born, Inc.

Year Introduced: Just Born began manufacturing Peeps in 1953, when they acquired the Rodda Candy Company. The Rodda Candy Company had been making its own version of marshmallow chicks for some time before that.

Flavors available: Original flavor Peeps come in all sorts of shapes and colors, too many to list here, but if you're looking for something out of the ordinary, we recommend trying some of these lip-smacking flavors: Hot Chocolate, Fruit Punch, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Sour Watermelon, Strawberry, Maple Brown Sugar, Candy Corn, Sugar Cookie, Sour Cherry, and Party Cake.

Recommended if you like: Marshmallows!

Brand Brothers and Sisters: Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales

Suggested uses: Peeps are great Easter Basket candy, of course, but there's so much more you can do with them! Use them to add color or even unique flavors to your s'mores, or float one on top of your hot chocolate for an adorable winter warmup. The blue and pink varieties are perfect for baby showers or gender reveals. And, if you're a fan of playing with your food, we highly recommend Peep Jousting:
