We’re back with an Easter edition of Sweet Thoughts from All City Candy. Get ready for some egg themed snacks, crafts, and facts! Make a Pretzelicious birds nest, or dye Easter Eggs with Skittles!
]]>
The tradition of chocolate bunnies originated in 19th century Germany. Hollow chocolate bunnies became particularly popular in America during the 1940s, spurred by chocolate rationing during World War II.
John Cadbury (yes, that Cadbury) made his first chocolate egg in 1875. The first chocolate egg was dark chocolate filled with dragees, and it wasn’t until 1971 that Cadbury launched their classic creme egg. If they brought back the classic chocolate egg, would you try it?
Dyeing Easter Eggs is a longstanding tradition, so have you ever wondered if you could dye eggs with Skittles? The answer is yes!
I used about half of a 50 oz bag of Skittles. I was nervous about using anything smaller because you never know how many of each color you’re going to get. I really want to try this with Wild Berry Skittles next, so if you do, please send pictures!
I found that the same rules apply as with dyeing eggs normally - adding more Skittles for a darker color, and leaving the egg in longer for a more vibrant color. I used 30 Skittles in each cup and left the egg in for 10 minutes. You can also do fun things to make the egg more interesting, like drawing with a white crayon or cracking the egg for a tie-dye effect.
I used the same mixture for a second round of eggs. They came out a slightly lighter shade, but it was hardly noticeable in pictures. The eggs from the second round did end up with a waxy film on them. I’m assuming that’s just the Skittles melting, and it was easily wiped off.

I’ve decided to put a Pretzelicious twist on this classic recipe! Typically made with chow mein noodles, I thought, why not use pretzels? It gives the bird's nest a nice sweet and salty twist. I’m going to be honest; I didn’t measure how many pretzels I used. I noticed that they work best when broken in half and went through half of a 16oz bag. I would suggest just eyeballing it; if you want to make a couple more nests, add more pretzels, or if you want a chocolatier nest, add less. Either way, it’s pretty hard to mess up chocolate and pretzels - they’ll taste good regardless!

]]>This recipe is very simple and can be made in 30 minutes or less. The beauty of using Now and Later Fruit Chews is the wide variety of flavors available to choose from. Virtually everyone can be a happy camper when you have options like Mango, Grape, Banana, Extreme Sour Cherry, Extreme Sour Apple, Extreme Sour Watermelon, Splits Lemon-Blue Raspberry, Splits Lemon-Lime, and more!
We used Strawberry-Kiwi and Pineapple Now and Laters for the syrup we made. If you need even more of an endorsement to try making Now and Later Syrup, our skeptical president, Elisabeth, thought the Now and Later Syrup was "pretty darn tasty."
In addition to the ingredients for this recipe, you’ll also need:
Ingredients
6 Packs (6 pieces per pack) of your favorite flavor of Now and Later Fruit Chews
2 Tablespoons Sugar
1-1/2 Cups Water
Instructions
1. Remove wrappers from all of the Now and Later squares and place in a bowl.
2. In a medium-sized sauce, bring water to a boil over medium-high heat.
3. Pour the sugar and unwrapped Now and Laters into the boiling water and stir until the Now and Laters are dissolved.
4. Lower heat to medium and continue to boil the mixture for 15 minutes.
5. Remove the Now and Later syrup from the stove and pour into a heat-proof storage container to cool. You can rapid-cool the syrup in the fridge or freezer if you can’t wait.
6. Once cool, use a spoon to remove the thin layer of wax that settled on the top of the container (Now and Laters are coated in wax to prevent the paper wrapper from sticking to the candies).
Now your syrup ready to use, or you can keep it refrigerated for up to two weeks, if it lasts that long!
As we mentioned earlier, you can use this versatile Now and Later Syrup in a variety of tasty ways:
You can also use the Now and Later Syrup to make beverages for an “of age” crowd at your socially distanced BBQ this summer. Here is the promised BONUS recipe for our All City Candy Cocktail “The Darci,” named after its creator, and our store manager.
Ingredients
1 Shot of your favorite Vodka
1 Shot of Kiwi-Strawberry Now and Later Syrup
1 Cup of your favorite Lemon-Lime Soda
3-4 Ice Cubes (More or less if you prefer)
Lime Garnish
Instructions
1. Pour all ingredients except ice into a medium-large glass or plastic cup.
2. Stir with a swizzle stick.
3. Add in your desired amount of ice and garnish with a lime wedge.
We’d love to see what goodies you top with your Now and Later Syrup. Be sure to tag us on Social Media if you make this or any of our other Cooking with Candy recipes.

]]>Milk Chocolate Dried Blueberries are perfect in these oatmeal cookies because you get the sweet tang of the blueberry and the yummy goodness of the smooth chocolate coating. For this recipe you will need 12 ounces of Milk Chocolate Covered Blueberries, so buying a pound is perfect – you’ll have enough for the cookies, plus some to snack on as you make them!
If Dad isn’t a blueberry fan, these cookies will also work great with Milk Chocolate Red Velvet Cherries, or go old school with a twist and use Chocolate Covered Raisins. Another benefit to making these cookies is oats have fiber, and dads love fiber (according to all the Cheerios commercials ever made). So, let’s get started and bake up these sweet treats for the special father in your life.
Yield: About 2 dozen large cookies
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1-1/2 cups Milk Chocolate Dried Blueberries
3 cups rolled oats or quick oats
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease two large cookie sheets or line with a Silpat or parchment paper.
2. Sort through your Chocolate Covered Blueberries and cut the large ones in half or quarters. (If you want more blueberry pieces distributed throughout your cookies, roughly chop all the Chocolate Covered Blueberries.) Set aside.
3. Combine the butter, shortening, and sugar in a large mixing bowl, or the bowl of your stand mixer, and beat until creamy, about 3-5 minutes. Add in eggs one at a time and mix until incorporated. Add the vanilla extract, beat another 30 seconds.
4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add into the wet ingredients and stir until almost fully combined, about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
5. Stir in the Chocolate Covered Blueberries and oats until fully combined, about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
6. Spoon out the dough by large tablespoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheets, leaving at least 2 inches between each cookie. A 2-tablespoon ice cream scoop will produce cookies that are approximately 3.5 inches in diameter
7. Bake until the edges of the cookies turn golden brown, about 12-13 minutes. Optional: We also put ours under the broiler to brown the tops. Do this for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
8. Cool 3-5 minutes on the cookie sheets. Then carefully remove them to a wire rack. Cool completely. They will be soft until completely cooled. Store tightly covered.
Extra Tip: If you don’t want to make all the cookies at once, spoon them onto a cookie sheet, but instead of putting them in the oven, pop them into the freezer. Once completely frozen (at least 8 hours), put them into an airtight container or plastic bag and keep them in your freezer. When you're craving some of these delicious cookies, put them on a lined tray and bake at 350° F for 15-17 minutes.

]]>Alert! Alert! Partners of awesome moms, MOTHER'S DAY IS THIS SUNDAY, and this year there will be no school-facilitated macaroni necklaces, handprint flower cards, or other cute crafty gifts your kids’ amazing teachers usually provide for those who may have forgotten to plan ahead. It’s all on you this year. But don't fret, we have you covered with a cooking activity the kiddos can practically do by themselves to make a lovely treat for Mom that will make her feel like royalty.
What better way to make Mom feel like the queen she is than by making All City Candy's delicious Red Velvet Chocolate Cherry Scones with Vanilla Cream Drizzle. Scones have been around for a long time – we’re talking since-before-the-United-States-was-a-country long time. The first known recipe dates back to late-1600s England. These were not good scones – basically flour, water, and an egg to bind it all together, then baked and drizzled with a bit of honey to make it more palatable. Needless to say, these scones did not really catch on. But then Queen Victoria's chef worked some kitchen magic, making them sweeter and flakier, and he insisted they be topped with clotted cream. As a result, scones became a staple at high teas under the reign of Queen Victoria and they have maintained their popularity with the current Queen, who is said to eat a scone every day with her “cuppa.”
The highlight of our Red Velvet Chocolate Cherry scones is, you might guess, Milk Chocolate Red Velvet Cherries, which are available at AllCityCandy.com or in our store in Richmond Heights, Ohio. These candies are so decadent you will most definitely want to get more than you need for the recipe. The cherries pair well merlots or other red wines for a sophisticated Mother's Day dessert you can enjoy once the kids go to bed (check out our friends at CLE Urban Winery - they deliver!).
While you're shopping for Milk Chocolate Red Velvet Cherries on our website, you may as well add in a few chocolate roses, too. These are pretty and tasty, sure to delight any mom in your life.
If Mom doesn't care for cherries, or red velvet, these scones would be outstanding with Milk Chocolate Blueberries, too!
Getting back on track, this recipe is pretty low-tech and will require some hands-on work, which is a great way to get your little princes or princesses involved in the baking action.
Yield 8 large scones
Ingredients
3 cups All Purpose Flour
1/2 cup Sugar
5 teaspoons Baking Powder
2 teaspoons Cinnamon
3/4 cup Cold Butter, diced
1/2 teaspoon Salt (omit if using salted butter)
1 Egg
1 cup Heavy Cream
1 to 1-1/2 cups Milk Chocolate Red Velvet Cherries, chopped
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt.
3. Cut the butter into the flour if you have a pastry blender. If you don’t have a pastry blender, this is where tiny hands come in handy (pun intended!): Squeeze the butter into the flour mixture using fingertips until it resembles coarse sand. There should not be any large chunks of butter left. You can use a food processer for this step as well, but that just means more dishes to wash.
4. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and cream. Pour the cream mixture into the flour mixture. Using a wooden spoon or stiff spatula, stir around the bowl three to four times.
5. Add in the chopped Red Velvet Cherries and continue to stir another six to eight times.
6. Lightly flour a clean work surface and dump out the crumbly mess that’s inside your bowl. Knead the dough mound a few times until it comes together and can be rolled. You may need to re-flour your work surface a few times, but go easy on the flour -- the more flour you add, the tougher the scones will become.
7. Roll out the dough into a 1/2-inch thick circle and cut into eight wedges (this makes huge wedges), or use a 2-inch round cookie cutter for traditionally shaped scones. Added tip: To show your love for your queen, you may want to consider cutting the dough into heart shapes 😉
8. Place cut dough on the cookie sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, depending on how large your scones are once cut. We baked our wedges for 20 minutes.
9. Once done, let scones cool on the pan for 5 minutes and then serve with a Vanilla Cream Glaze and extra Red Velvet Cherries as a yummy garnish.
Ingredients
1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
3 tablespoons Heavy Cream
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Instructions
1. Sift powdered sugar into a small bowl.
2. Add in the cream and vanilla and stir until smooth.
3. Drizzle your scones with the glaze. If your scones are still warm, the glaze will turn more translucent; if your scones are completely cool, the glaze will have a more solid white color.
We hope you’ll make these scones for the queen in your life, and would love to see pictures of the kids helping in the kitchen. Be sure to tag us on social media with your Red Velvet Chocolate Cherry Scones fit for royalty!

]]>How can you be sure these cupcakes are as delicious as we say? We used the proven science of the “Nephew Test.” Our resident staff baker made these cupcakes for her hard-to-please, picky-eater nephew. At first bite, his eyes shot open in surprise and he exclaimed a guttural “MMMMMMM!” So yes, we’re confident these are top-notch cupcakes.
Just what takes this recipe to the next level of flavor? That would be the addition of Gertrude Hawk Mini Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Buckeyes: luscious, delicious, and classic. With these staples for the peanut-butter-and-chocolate lover, the cupcakes become a must-bake, but we’re still not done! To amplify the flavors, we paired our Chocolate Buckeye Cupcakes with a creamy Peanut Butter Icing, and both recipes are below.
If you would like to give this a shot, you can find these incredible Mini Buckeyes at our All City Candy store located in the bulk section, or you can order Mini Buckeyes online in 3-lb bags (leaving extras for decorating…and maybe a few for snacking). Now let’s get baking!
Yield 12-14 cupcakes
Ingredients
1 cup Gluten-Free Flour*, plus 1/2 teaspoon to sprinkle on the Buckeyes - use your favorite
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon Granulated Sugar
2 tablespoons Dark Cocoa Powder
1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1/2 cup Buttermilk**
1/2 cup cold Coffee
1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
1 whole Egg
1 Egg Yolk
1/3 cup Mini Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Buckeyes, cut into quarters
A couple of tips before you begin...
* Check your gluten-free flour. Does it contain Xanthan Gum? Most 1-to-1 gluten-free flour mixes do. If your flour is not a 1-to-1 substitution, it most likely does not contain Xanthan Gum. If it is not on the ingredients label on your gluten-free flour, add 1/4 teaspoon of Xanthan Gum to the dry ingredients. [Fun fact: Xanthan Gum acts like gluten in wheat flours, so it provides the structure in gluten-free recipes. Without it, baked goods can become oddly crumbly. See? Science is fun!]
** Don’t have buttermilk on hand? Here’s a quick substitution: Add 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice to a measuring cup, and fill the rest with regular milk (or almond/soy milk if you so desire) until you hit the 1/2 cup mark. Then, let sit for 5 minutes before starting the recipe.
Instructions
1. Sift the gluten-free flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt together in a medium- sized bowl.
2. In a large bowl, combine all the wet ingredients (buttermilk, coffee, vegetable oil, and eggs) and whisk together until well combined, for about 30 seconds.
3. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet and whisk together for 1 minute. There should not be any dry patches or lumps; if there are, keep whisking. [Note: The beauty of this recipe is it is gluten-free, so there is no chance of over mixing or risk of a rubbery end product.]
4. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of gluten-free flour on the Mini Buckeyes and toss to coat. This will help stratify the Buckeyes throughout the batter and prevent them from sinking to the bottom.
5. Add the flour-coated Buckeyes to the mix and stir in until distributed.
6. Now let the batter sit for 30 minutes. Do not skip this step: it is important for the gluten- free flour to have a chance to absorb the liquid in the batter. Otherwise you will get crumbly cupcakes. It also gives the baking soda extra time to puff the batter so you have a better rise and not flat, dense, sad cupcakes.
7. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and dispense your batter into lined cupcake pans.
8. Bake the cupcakes until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out batter-free, roughly 17-20 minutes.
9. Let the cakes cool and frost with Peanut Butter American Buttercream Icing (recipe below) or use your favorite alternative.
Ingredients
2/3 cup Butter, super soft but not melted
1-1/2 cups Powdered Sugar, sifted
1/4 cup Creamy Peanut Butter
2-3 tablespoons Milk
Instructions
1. Whip butter in a stand or hand mixer on high for 5 minutes; it should be fluffy and white in color.
2. Add half of the powdered sugar and mix on medium for 2 minutes. Scrape down the bowl.
3. Add the remainder of the powdered sugar and mix for another 2 minutes. Scrape down the bowl.
4. Add in (read: thwack in) the peanut butter and mix for another 2 minutes. Scrape down the bowl again, then check the consistency; it should be somewhat loose, so that it can be spread or piped. If it needs to be a bit looser, add in milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, scraping down the bowl to check the consistency between each addition.
5. Spread or pipe the icing onto the cupcakes.
6. Decorate the iced cupcakes with any Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Buckeyes you have remaining (if you’ve not already eaten the whole lot – you know, for quality control purposes). Enjoy!

]]>So, what are macarons? They are an oh-so-scrumptious, gluten free, French sandwich cookie, based off egg-white sweet meringue. While they are incredibly tasty, macarons require a great amount of detail; by the time you finish baking these delicious treats, you may consider a career change to pastry chef because conquering a macaron is an epic, finicky, and detail-oriented affair! For these macarons specifically, we will be making the confection in the Italian style. Yes, that does mean we are making a French macaron, with influences from Italy, for an Irish holiday; a true world-traveled treat if we’ve ever heard of one!
Most importantly, if you are an Andes Creme de Menthe Thins fan, you are going to be adding this ganache filling to absolutely everything, and we do mean everything – including, but not limited to, ice cream, donuts, cakes, fruit dips, cracker spreads, breakfast toast, and just about anything else you can put in your mouth!
A few details before we start...
You will want to make the Andes Mint ganache first, so it has time to chill in the refrigerator. If you’re in need of a restock of these classic minty candies, you can find Andes Creme de Menthe Thins online or in our candy store in Richmond Heights, Ohio, near Cleveland.
Also, please note the macaron ingredients are measured in grams, so a food scale is needed. Precision makes perfection when it comes to these French delicacies. Now, on to the recipes!
Ingredients
1/2 cup Heavy Whipping Cream
35 (6 oz) Andes Creme de Menthe Thins
1/4 cup (1.5 oz) Milk or Dark Melting Chocolate Wafers
1. Chop the melting wafers and Andes Mints into small, split-pea to rice-sized pieces and put them into a heatproof bowl. The pieces need to be very tiny for the cream to melt them.
2. Heat the heavy whipping cream to near boiling. If doing this on a stove, you will start to see bubbles form at the edge of the pan. If doing this in a microwave, it takes about 1-1/2 to 2 minutes; watch the cream, and if you see bubbles start to form, it is warm enough.
3. Pour the hot cream into the chopped Andes Mint and melting chocolate mixture. Make sure all the chocolate is covered and let it sit for 5 minutes.
4. Whisk the chocolate and cream mixture until smooth. This may take 2-3 minutes. If there are lumps that are not melting, place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and dissolve the remainder of the chocolate chunks by whisking continuously. This will be your ganache!
5. Place the ganache into the refrigerator for 30-45 minutes until cool and semi-solid.
6. Remove ganache from the fridge and, using an electric hand mixer, whip the ganache for 5 minutes on high until it doubles in volume. Put the whipped ganache into a piping bag fitted with your favorite large piping tip.
(Makes 15 regular-sized Macarons)
Ingredients
2 Egg Whites, separated
102 grams Powdered Sugar
95 grams Almond Flour
95 grams Granulated Sugar
30 grams Water
Green Gel Food Coloring
1. Combine the powdered sugar and almond flour into the hopper of a food processor. Blitz 15 times; this helps mix the almond flour and powdered sugar, as well as to make the almond flour a bit finer.
2. Pour the almond and sugar mixture into a sieve and shake into a large bowl. This will help get rid of the larger almond pieces that will make the macarons look chunky and deformed.
3. Add in one of the egg whites to the almond sugar mixture. Stir until a paste is formed.
4. Pour in your gel food coloring and give it a few more turns of the spatula. It will look dark at this point, but when the egg whites are added, it will lighten up a bit. Cover with plastic wrap or a moist towel and set aside.
NOTE: The next steps will start the process for an Italian meringue; this can be a little tricky to make but will make the macaron batter more stable.
5. In a pan, combine the water and granulated sugar, and place over medium-high heat. The temperature we are aiming for is 244 degrees or the "soft ball stage." At this point, do not stir the sugar and water mixture; it will lead to crystallization.
6. While the water and sugar mixture is heating, add the remaining egg white to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. When the water and granulated sugar mixture hits about 220 degrees, turn on the stand mixer.
7. Once the water and granulated sugar mixture reaches 244 degrees, remove from the heat and pour it slowly down the side of the stand mixer bowl. NOTE: BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL - this sugar will be very hot and may burn. Make sure you pour down the side and not directly on the whisk, as this may result in batter flying out of the bowl.
8. After all the sugar syrup has been added to the egg white in the stand mixer, crank up the speed to high and whip for 5 minutes.
9. Bring back your almond and sugar paste mixture, add in 1/3 of the Italian meringue, and stir until it is combined. This helps lighten up the paste so the remainder of the meringue can be folded into the paste.
10. Fold in the remainder of the meringue. You will know your macaron batter is done when it ribbons off the spatula; if it plops, keep folding. This will take about 3 minutes.
11. Put your macaron batter into a piping bag. On a parchment or silicone-lined baking tray, pipe dots roughly the same size. These will be the outside shells for your macarons.
Unsure how big to make the dots? We have you covered; here's a template for the perfect-sized macarons.
PRO TIP: Tape a strip of paper to the side of the template. Place template underneath your parchment paper. When you're finished piping, use the strips of paper to carefully pull the template off your baking sheet before baking!
12. With piping completed, tap the trays on the counter 4-5 times to help remove air bubbles (you might have to use a toothpick to pop any stubborn ones) and bake at 325 degrees for 14-15 minutes.
Assembling your Macarons:
Once the macaron shells are cool, flip half of them over and pipe on your Andes Mint Chocolate Ganache. Top with the remaining shells to make your cookie sandwich.
If you want to add even more Andes mint flavor, now’s the chance! We chopped up more of the candy and dipped the middles of the cookies into the candy and sprinkled the chopped Andes Mints over the top of our macaron pile. If you love mint and chocolate like we do, it’s a perfect way to finish off these amazing treats!

]]>It’s March and St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. Most candy lovers will be racing to grab green candy, like gummi bears or M&M’s, or perhaps some gold-wrapped chocolate coins. But what about the Rainbow?
Beyond its association in some Irish lore for being where Leprechauns keep their pot of gold, the Rainbow acts as a symbol of hope in many pieces of Irish culture; as rainbows do not have an “end,” it can be seen as an image of enduring optimism.
For the candy lover, the rainbow can represent infinite opportunities for sweet treats! With that, All City Candy has plenty of ways to add the whole spectrum of color to your celebrations.
We recently showed how Rainbow Twizzlers can be used for DIY perler-bead projects, but these licorice twists, with 6 great flavors, are great additions to any candy celebration. Or what about Rainbow Sour Belts? These pucker-worthy treats are great either on their own or as a rainbow topping to brownies, cupcakes, or any St. Paddy’s pastries! That’s to say nothing for other sour, sweet, and tangy candy, like SweetTARTS Ropes, Nerds Ropes, and more!
One of the most classic St. Patrick’s Day candies might be gold chocolate coins, which have delicious milk chocolate wrapped up looking like farthings or threepences; but All City Candy has a full breadth of colors for your coins, letting even chocolate lovers get in on the colorful fun!
Have a jelly bean lover? Jelly Belly has the full breadth of colors at its disposal, with plenty of shades and clever flavors to fill any rainbow-tinged candy dish. Plus, beyond its many hues, in an appropriate turn for the holiday, you can even try their Draft Beer flavor!
What’s your favorite candy for St. Patrick’s Day? Do you have any clever sweet recipes for the holiday? And what symbol for St. Patrick’s do you enjoy the most? We’d love to see your answers and creations; share them with us on social media:

Watch our how-to video for instructions, or follow the detailed instructions and photos below.
Supplies:
Directions to Make Edible-Style Perler Beads:
1. Cut your "beads" - carefully use the scissors to cut the Twizzlers into 1/4-inch pieces (use the ruler to make sure they're all the same size), about 18 pieces per Twizzler.
2. Choose the template design you want to make and tape it down on a stable work space. Cut 2 pieces of parchment paper so they fit over the design, with some extra space around the edges. Place one piece of the parchment on top of the design (don't worry, you'll still be able to see the design through the parchment), and set the other piece aside.
3. Using your choice of colors, place the cut sides of the beads on the parchment paper, filling in the design completely. Make sure all the beads are touching.
4. Once your design is how you want it, gently place the second piece of parchment paper on top of the bead design.
5. Keeping the parchment paper on top of your design, carefully hold the iron on top of the covered design until the beads start to melt and fuse together, about 30 to 60 seconds on the iron's highest setting.
6. Once the first side is melted, gently flip over the design keeping the parchment papers in place, and fuse the second side with the iron (this is optional but highly recommended).
7. Allow the design to cool (we didn't wait, and man was that hot!), then slowly and carefully remove the paper from the candy designs.
When you're done, not only will you have a colorful design, but a delightful and tasty snack. Yum!
Don't forget to share your designs with us on our social media! We would love to see them :)

]]>What makes our version different? We are so glad you asked! Instead of ordinary semi-sweet chocolate chips, we use a festive winter candy, Sno-Caps Semi-Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils, plus we’ve changed up the ingredients a bit.
Swapping out the ordinary old chocolate chips for Sno-Caps candies gives these cookies a touch of pizzazz and an added bit of sugary crunch that elevates your sweet treats from yum to wowza! Now, grab your apron, break out the mixer, and let’s whip up a batch of these onomatopoeia inspiring cookies.
1. Melt the butter in the microwave until almost completely liquid.
2. Sift together the flour, salt, and baking soda. (No Sifter, no biggie: Combine the dry ingredients and whisk them up to distribute the salt and baking powder.)
3. Pour the butter into your stand mixer’s work bowl (or a large bowl if you are mixing by hand or with a hand mixer). Add the three sugars and beat with the paddle attachment on medium speed for three minutes.
4. Meanwhile, in the bowl you melted your butter in, whisk together the whole egg, egg yolk, milk, and vanilla extract.
5. Slow the mixer to “stir” and drizzle the egg mixture into the butter and sugar. Mix until thoroughly combined, about 30-60 seconds. Scrape down the bowl with a rubber spatula.
6. Dump the dry ingredients into the wet, and mix on a low speed for 30 seconds. Scrape the bowl with a rubber spatula and mix for an additional 30 seconds.
7. Remove the bowl from the mixer and stir in (by hand!) the Sno-Caps candies. Mixing by hand will ensure less damage to the chips.
8. Chill the dough for 1 hour in the fridge or 30 minutes in the freezer. YOU MUST DO THIS STEP! If you don’t, your cookies will be flat and sad like Wile E. Coyote when he gets run over by the Roadrunner driving a Mack truck.
9. Heat the oven to 375 degrees F
10. Scoop the dough into walnut shell sized portions and drop onto parchment or silicone lined baking sheets about 2-3 inches apart.
11. Bake for 10-13 minutes, or until your preferred level of doneness has been achieved.
12. Remove tray from the oven and wait at least 5 minutes before devouring to help prevent “pizza burn” mouth.
13. Put on a fuzzy robe, slide on some comfy slippers, pour a tall glass of ice-cold milk (both moo and nut varieties go well with these cookies), and ENJOY!
If you don’t want to bake all the batter at once, these cookies freeze extremely well -- just portion the batter and freeze.
Variation: Looking for an alternate to sugar cookies for St. Patrick’s Day? Make these cookies and color the dough green using gel food coloring at step five. Also, instead of using Sno-Caps candies, use Mini Rainbow Nonpareils, which can be found in the bulk section at our store and online at AllCityCandy.com. Now you’ve just made Leprechaun Crack!

Don’t fret though, because we can help you with your sweet tooth as you look for satisfying treats that are lower in sugar or gluten free. We have a robust sugar free section featuring Brach's Sugar Free hard candies and GoLightly products that are not only sugar free, but also gluten free and Kosher certified. Don't worry, chocolate lovers, because we have an assortment of reduced sugar/sugar free candy in bulk, like our no sugar added bridge mix or chocolate raisins.
If you are a caramel fan, you definitely need to check out Tom and Jenny's brand of sugar free soft caramels, available in a variety of flavors. Stop by the store or visit us online and check out our stupendous sugar free selection!

]]>Giving back to the community is very important to us at All City Candy. So important, in fact, that it's even in our mission statement. The reason we're able to be so generous is because of our customers and the support they give to our charitable giving programs. Thanks to that enthusiasm and drive to give, we've developed the Sweets for Soldiers program at All City Candy.
We're kicking off this year's holiday season by working with Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center to bring some candy joy to the men and women who have served our country this Veterans Day. With your help, we are aiming to brighten the day of 300 patients at the VA by providing candy bars with wrappers that have been custom colored by children in the Cleveland area.
From September 30, 2019, through November 9, 2019, you can purchase a candy bar online to donate to the Sweets for Soldiers program, or you can visit either All City Candy location in Richmond Heights or Mentor, Ohio. Your donated candy bars will be delivered to the patients at the VA medical center on November 12, 2019.
We also have several different printable candy wrapper designs available. Simply print the design(s) of your choice, have your child color them at home - or color one yourself! - and then drop them off at one of our All City Candy locations. Wrappers and coloring tables are also set up at each store.

So we've decided it's time to share our candy buffet knowledge with the world by launching an online informational series of short videos and infographics to teach party hosts and planners how to create their own candy buffets for parties, weddings, and other events.
A candy buffet is a display of candy in self-serve jars or containers that can be specially designed to complement the color or theme of an event. The candy buffet can serve as the dessert table, or it can be set it up for guests to make and take their own personalized party favors.
Beyond the obvious tasty delight of the candy, however, the candy buffet can serve a larger purpose than just dessert or party favors. It’s also interactive and a great conversation starter. Everyone loves candy, no matter the age, and guests will mix and mingle over the buffet table, looking, tasting, and sharing fond memories of their favorite candies. You'll find that everyone at a candy buffet table is smiling and having a great time.
As more and more people turned to us as a resource for creative ideas and set-up tips, in addition to the candy, we realized that offering a candy buffet service would be a natural extension of our commitment to serving our customers.
to customers in our local market area (northeast Ohio), but people from out of town began to find us online and request our help, too. That’s why we decided to create this series of DIY videos, so we can empower anyone to design their own candy buffet.
All City Candy’s candy buffet video and infographic series is a comprehensive online resource, providing all the information required to create the perfect candy buffet, including ideas, advice, checklists, and resources. There are six videos in the series, which can be found on our website, AllCityCandy.com:
1. Candy Buffet Basics - Start Here to Learn All About Candy Buffets
2. Tips for Choosing the Best Candy for your Candy Buffet
3. The Most Popular Candy Flavors for a Candy Buffet
4. How Much Candy to Buy for a Candy Buffet
5. Supplies, Jars & Everything Else You’ll Need to Create a Candy Buffet
6. How to Set Up a Candy Buffet from Start to Finish
Each video has a corresponding infographic to summarize the key points. Our website also features a gallery of candy buffets we've designed, to offer creative ideas and inspiration, as well as hundreds of bulk candy products that can be sorted by color to make it easy to find the right candy for any occasion.

]]>The 49th annual Earth Day is being observed on Monday, April 22, 2019, and All City Candy is celebrating the day by sharing a recap of our commitment to corporate and social responsibility.
“We’re proud of our efforts as they relate to social and civic responsibility, and we want the community to be aware of our commitment to them, and to the planet,” says Elisabeth Sapell, founder and CEO of All City Candy.
Here's a summary of All City Candy’s efforts and activities:
All City Candy offers more than 800 varieties of bulk candy, presented in bins so customers can select and scoop out their favorites. To ensure sanitary conditions, every customer is provided their own scoop to use when filling up their bulk bags. Between both locations, customers use approximately 300-400 scoops a week.
“We consciously made the decision to buy a better-quality plastic scoop so they can be washed, sanitized and re-used in store,” says Sapell. “Making this effort not only allows us to employ students from the Monarch Center for Autism in University Heights, OH, and the Mentor CARES program of the Mentor Public Schools, but it also helps to divert approximately 936 pounds of plastic waste from the landfill annually.”
All City Candy ships candy orders worldwide through our ecommerce store, AllCityCandy.com, and our sustainability efforts also extend to our internet customers.
“We strive to use the right sized packaging and packing materials to ensure items fit securely in the box and are packaged well for transport,” says Sapell. “We want our online customers to receive their orders in perfect condition.”
All City Candy uses boxes from the United States Postal Service that are made from post-consumer recycled cardboard, are registered with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and are Cradle to Cradle certified. We also source boxes locally from S&S Packaging, another Cleveland, OH, business. S&S Packaging’s boxes are made in America and manufactured less than 150 miles from Cleveland. The boxes contain a minimum of 25% recycled content, and the manufacturer sources raw materials from FSC certified forests.
All City Candy’s mission is to “provide a place of happiness where we create fond memories and inspire people to be creative, to be kind, and to be giving.” Nothing embodies this more than our Candy for Kids program, which occurs twice a year in partnership with University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.
“For the past four years, we’ve facilitated a candy donation program where customers can purchase candy that our staff then packs into Spring Baskets or Santa Sacks. We deliver the candy to the children at Rainbow who are unable to go home for the holidays,” says Sapell. “Thanks to the generosity of our customers and staff, we delivered 175 Santa Sacks last winter and we just delivered 250 Spring Baskets this week, bringing a bit of happiness into the children's hospital rooms.”
Occasionally in the All City Candy stores, there’s a lollipop that is broken, chewy candies that stick together, or a bag that popped open during shipping. While the candy is still safe and edible, it cannot be sold. Instead of discarding the approximately 180 pounds of candy and creating more waste, we donate the unsaleable candy to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which ministers to the homeless of Cleveland, providing comfort, food, and -- thanks to All City Candy -- a sweet treat to those in need.
“Community makes us what we are and drives our mission at All City Candy,” says Sapell. “So we enjoy giving back to those in our community who help our store prosper.”
In 2018, All City Candy donated more than $7,700 in gift cards, gift baskets, and sponsorships to northeast Ohio charities and organizations that used the donations for silent auctions, raffles, and prizes to help raise money for a wide range of causes.
“We thank all those in the community who invest in us so we can invest in others doing great work in our region,” says Sapell.
Taking care of each other and never, ever giving up are two of All City Candy’s core values. These principles are evident in our partnerships with the Monarch Center for Autism and Mentor CARES, programs that cater to children and young adults with neurological differences.
“We wanted to create opportunities for learning and success for students of these programs, so they can gain experience working at a store, interacting with new environments, and teach them to never, ever give up,” says Sapell. “We love having the students come in to help us with jobs in the store. Watching them discover that they can accomplish a task adds a bright spot to our day.”
“All City Candy is dedicated to the preservation of all sweet-treat-loving generations, and we want to do our part to help reduce our carbon footprint so up-and-coming candy fans inherit a healthy planet,” says Sapell.
All City Candy participates in the Arbor Day Foundation's Carbon Emissions Offset Program, which is dedicated to reforesting state and national parks across the USA with beautiful, carbon sequestering trees. Our $500 donation to the program helped offset 20% of our Richmond Heights and Mentor stores' scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions that were produced in 2018. This is the equivalent to 800 tree seedlings being planted and maintained for 10 years in a protected forest, helping to make the future a bit sweeter.
To reduce our carbon footprint, the lighting at our Richmond Heights location is being adapted to use more energy efficient LED light bulbs.
"This brighter, higher quality lighting will not only improve the customer experience in the store, but we will also be reducing our energy usage by approximately 6,800 kWh per year,” says Sapell.
The reduction on energy usage will save nearly 4.8 metric tons of carbon from being released into the atmosphere for the 10-year lifespan of the lights.
We are proud to call Cleveland home. Part of Cleveland's identity is its proximity to Lake Erie, one of the largest bodies of fresh water on the planet. More than 5.5 million pounds of plastics pollute Lake Erie and its shores every year, and All City Candy is doing our part to help combat the plastic pollution coming from the city.
“You may hear us ask if you need a bag for your items, or we may put your candy purchases in a box for you to carry out,” says Sapell. “We are now also offering reusable All City Candy bags for sale at both store locations. Not only can you buy a colorful, fun bag to tote around your treats, you can help save the planet!”
