Candy A to Z: Kit Kat

January 11, 2018

Kit Kat may not be as new or unusual as some of the other candies we've featured, but it is definitely worthy of its moment in the spotlight! These surprisingly simple chocolate bars have been thrilling palates with their delicate crunch since the 1930s. What is it that makes Kit Kats so appealing? Perhaps it's the perfect crispiness of the wafers combined with just the right amount of chocolate. Maybe it's the fact that their unique design makes them so easy to share. Most likely it's that unmistakable (except to The Office's Andy Bernard) jingle that just begs you to take a candy break.

Kit Kat Bar UnwrappedBut the appeal of Kit Kat goes beyond its great taste. These crispy chocolate bars have also become worldwide cultural icons: Students in Japan consider them a source of good luck when taking academic exams. A version of the Android operating system was named Kit Kat. And comedian Mitch Hedberg hilariously lamented that having the words "Kit Kat" imprinted on the bars "robs you of chocolate." (We're willing to let it slide.) Kit Kats aren't just great snacks, they're practically celebrities!

Jimmy Sweet Tooth says: I've always liked Kit Kats, but it's only in the last five years or so that they've really moved to the top of my "favorites" list. As is often the case with love, I can't tell you why or when it happened, but one day it just hit me. Now I would say that Kit Kats are quite possibly my favorite candy bar.
