Hooray for DOTS! They're the most colorful candy we've profiled so far, their name describes them perfectly, and they have that classic gumdrop shape. Could you ask for anything more? How about the fact that they're a peanut- and gluten-free candy? How about the fact that they're super chewy and uber delicious? Yep, DOTS really have a lot going for them. And their manufacturers, Tootsie Roll Industries, have a lot going for them, too. According to their website, they crank out over 4 billion DOTS every year!
For a little more info and a fun "behind-the-scenes" tour, check out this video from Tootsie Roll's YouTube channel:
Jimmy Says: "Here's another candy I never ate as a kid. Why? I'm not sure. I love that they have a really firm chewiness to them. It's not a hard chew like some caramels or taffies, but they're firmer and sticker inside than most gummi bears. They're really fun to eat! P.S. Am I the only one who never thought of DOTS as gumdrops? I guess I didn't see it because they don't have that sandy, sugary coating."
Major components: Ummmmmm...gummi? (technically corn syrup and sugar, but they're not as appetizing when you put it that way)
Primary texture: Chewy (soft, but firm)
Flavor profile: Fruity (strawberry, cherry, lime, orange and lemon in original assortment)
Alternate flavors: Tropical DOTS (island nectar, wild mango, grapefruit cooler, carambola melon and paradise punch), Sour DOTS (cherry, lemon, lime, orange and grape), special holiday releases, too!
Manufacturer: Tootsie Roll Industries, LLC
Year introduced: 1945
Brand Brothers and Sisters: Candy Blox, Caramel Apple Pops, Cella's Chocolate Covered Cherries, Charleston Chew, Charms Sweet Pops, Charms Blow Pops, Crows, Cry Baby Extra Sour Bubble Gum, Dubble Bubble, Fluffy Stuff Cotton Candy, Frooties, Junior Mints, Nik-L-Nip, Sugar Babies, Sugar Daddy, Tootsie Pops, Tootsie Roll, Razzles, and so many more we can't possibly fit them all here. (Whew, that's a big family!)
Suggested uses: DOTS' bright colors and traditional gumdrop shape make them perfect decorating candy. Anything from gingerbread houses to cakes can benefit from a few delectable DOTS! They're perfect for candy-themed parties, and the fact that they come in boxes instead of wrappers makes them a unique element on your candy buffet. The strong red, yellow, green colors give these candies a sort of "traffic light" vibe, so they fit in well with car, racing, New York City or Sweet Sixteen themed parties too!
