What the heck is a Buckeye?

If you've been paying attention to the "Featured Products" on our homepage (and you should be paying attention to them), you've probably noticed that we're promoting Harry London Buckeyes.

As Ohioans, the term "Buckeye" is as natural and familiar as, say, Cincinnati Chili or Bertman Original Ball Park Mustard. If you're not from our great state, however, you might be a little bit confuzzled. Behold, the delectable Buckeye:

The most important thing for you to know about Buckeyes is that they feature the unbeatable flavor combination of chocolate and peanut butter. We'll repeat that for emphasis: Chocolate. And. Peanut butter. The arrangement is simple, as you can see above. A dollop of peanut butter, a premium milk chocolate shell, presto, a two-toned confectionary delight! Frankly, we're surprised these aren't universally known and available. So, what is it that makes Buckeyes so endeared to Ohio, in particular?

Real BuckeyeBuckeyes (the chocolate and peanut butter kind) are so named because they resemble the seeds of the Ohio Buckeye tree. These seeds, likewise, are named for their resemblance to the eye of a deer. Male deer are called "bucks", hence, "buckeye." The Ohio Buckeye is the state tree of Ohio, due to its abundance here. Our state nickname is also "The Buckeye State," so the term really permeates our identity.

Not so fun fact: Actual buckeyes (from the tree) are poisonous, so play it safe and stick with the ones we sell here!

Harry London Buckeye vs Real Buckeye

Brutus BuckeyeOf course, the best known Buckeyes are the ones who play for Ohio State University. As you might imagine, this eight time national champion team is kind of a big deal in Ohio, and their legions of loyal fans latch on to anything and everything that looks like, sounds like, or reminds them of their beloved football team and its Brutus Buckeye mascot. Needless to say, a lot of chocolate & peanut butter Buckeyes are consumed at tailgate parties.

Given the popularity of anything and everything "Buckeye" it's no wonder that these chocolate and peanut butter sensations are an Ohio favorite. In fact, the Harry London Buckeyes we sell are produced just about an hour's drive south of our store in beautiful Canton, Ohio, so you can be sure they're the real deal.

Now that you know the backstory, why not order yourself some Harry London Buckeyes and join us in enjoying an Ohio tradition? If you've never tried them, you're in for a real treat. If you have had them before, think of this as the perfect excuse to indulge in an old favorite once again. Either way, you'll be glad you did!
