How to Build a Better Easter Basket!

April 05, 2017

Building a Better Easter Basket

It's hard to believe, but Easter is less than two weeks away! If you're a parent, a grandparent, or a super cool aunt or uncle, that means you're probably going to be assembling at least one Easter basket in the near future.

Now, any large amount of candy is going to make a child's day, but at All City Candy we're about quality, not just quantity. Everyone on our staff has participated in a rigorous month-long training program, taught by the Easter Bunny himself, to master the craft of basket building. We put together this handy guide to help you create a basket the kids in your life will remember for years to come!

Step 1: The Basket

Wicker BasketsThere aren't many rules here. Perhaps you have some Easter baskets that have been in your family for years. If so, use those! If not, make this the year to start a new tradition and pick up some sturdy wicker baskets that you can re-use each spring. Bonus points if you add a festive bow or wrap the handle in a pastel ribbon.

Size and shape don't matter much, but remember, you have to fill it! Save the XXL basket for laundry!

Step 2: Grass

Green Licorice Candy for Filling Easter Baskets | All City CandyWhen we were growing up, Easter grass was an unearthly shredded plastic that was both hokey and bad for the environment. Skip that nastiness and line your basket with some green crinkle-cut paper for a prettier and "greener" solution.

If your baskets are clean, you may even want to try some Green Licorice Candy for an edible way to beautify your basket! Just be sure to line the basket first to prevent any sticky residue (cling wrap or waxed paper ought to do the trick!).

Step 3: The Big Chocolate

Easter Basket Centerpiece: Big Chocolate BunnyHere's where your Easter basket really starts to take shape! Pick out a large item to be your basket's centerpiece. A bunny or cross are traditional, and our preference is (of course) CHOCOLATE! Solid milk chocolate makes a big impression, but if you want to save money or calories, there are many hollow varieties that will have the same jaw-dropping impact.

Recommended: Niagara Chocolates Solid Milk Chocolate Easter Bunny, Reese's Giant 1 Pound Peanut Butter Bunny, Hershey's Solid Milk Chocolate Bunny.

Step 4: Sidekicks

Easter Basket SidekicksThese are larger items that go alongside your centerpiece to really fill out the main part of the Easter basket. It's a great place to include king-size or novelty candy, or even a book, stuffed animal, or toy. Position one on either side of your chocolate centerpiece and you're good to go!

Step 5: Big-Little Treats

Easter Basket Big-Little TreatsWith the biggest and best taking center stage, there's probably room for a few other goodies down front. Try a few regular-sized candy bars, smaller toys, or larger individually-wrapped treats like Cadbury Creme Eggs. This is also the prime location for a few colorful plastic eggs with stickers, temporary tattoos, or even a dollar bill inside.

Step 6: Fill 'er up!

Finished Easter BasketNow that your basket is stacked and stuffed, you just need to fill in any gaps with something tiny and fun. A handful or two of mini candy bars, gumballs or jelly beans should do the trick. Your basket is complete!

Recommended: Mars Easter Candy Variety Pack, Pastel Hershey's Kisses, Palmer Pastel Foiled Chocolate Eggs

The Easter Bunny tells us that his preference is to hide the baskets to maximize Easter morning fun. That part's up to you. One thing that won't be hidden is the excitement on the faces of your baskets' recipients. If you follow these instructions, it's sure to be an Easter surprise they won't soon forget!
