When we were kids, a red tongue (or a red hand) was a dead giveaway that someone had a box of Red Hots. And that they were going to have to share it with us! The great thing about Red Hots is that they're just as incendiary as Atomic FireBalls but you can eat them in increments, reaching optimum heat without ever having to take a break. Plus, they're not just candy -- you can also use them in baking, to decorate your gingerbread house (they make perfect doorknobs), as Valentine treats (decorate a homemade card, or pour a handful into a little heart-shaped bag). As kids we liked to use them to give our gingerbread men measles, but that's just us.

History has forgotten why it might have been desirable for candy to resemble legumes ("But, Mom, I did eat some veggies today -- I had Boston Baked Beans!" wink, wink, nudge, nudge). One theory is that the name is due to the fact that the bean dish of the same name calls for lots of sugar (and peanuts are a legume).
Boston Baked Beans candy are peanuts that have been put in a revolving pan to which other ingredients -- sugar, flavoring and coloring -- are slowly added. Introduced in the 1930s by Ferrara Pan Candy, these reddish-brown candy-coated peanuts have commanded legions of fans, in Boston and all over the world.

Let's face it -- "blue raspberries" don't exist in nature -- only in the playful, happy world of candy, where the marriage of sweet and tart berry flavors have been a hit for years. Blue Raspberry Laffy Taffy is a special treat, with a tart, sweet flavor and a texture that's always soft and chewy. On top of all that taffy goodness, you get jokes too -- one on every wrapper. OK, they're not Jerry Seinfeld or Louis C.K. funny -- these are submitted by children, for goodness sake! -- there's something at least a little clever about "Owlgebra" (What's the owl's favorite subject in school?) and "Nobody nose" (What do you call a person with no body and no nose?). A favorite candy with kids, individually-wrapped taffy is great for piñatas and party favors. Adults have also been known to keep a bowl on their desks to sweeten up grumpy coworkers.
