Once upon a time, many Halloweens ago, we would trade our sisters a piece or two of chocolate (yes, CHOCOLATE ) candy in return for all their SweeTARTS. They thought they got the better deal, but when their plastic pumpkins were all empty, we were still untwisting the ends of cellophane tubes of sour, crunchy SweeTARTS disks. Inimitable SweeTARTS, multicolor tablets in their signature wrappers, burst onto the candy scene in 1963 as a less messy alternative to Pixy Stix powder. Back in the day, parents had the time to complain to a candy manufacturer about the messes their kids were making with the powder from Pixy Stix and its candy kin Lik-M-Aid (now sold as Fun Dip). Apparently parents of the late '50s and early '60s were tired of finding Pixy dust in the bindings of Dick and Jane books and having to drag the old Kirby or Electrolux vacuum all over the house to clean up spills. The candy maker obliged, pressing Pixy Stix powder into the little tart tablets we all know and love, and a new candy was born.
SweeTARTS come in five fruit flavors: blue raspberry (blue), cherry (pink), grape (purple), orange (orange) and green apple (green). Since they're individually wrapped, SweeTarts are perfect for Halloween, birthday party goody bags, piñatas, and lunchboxes.
